Kwok Hoi Chan for Steiner 'Chromatic' Modular Sofa in Red Purple Colors

About the Item

Kwok Hoi Chan for Steiner, sectional sofa, model ´chromatic´, fabric, France, 1970 A postmodern design by Kwok Hoi Chan created in 1970 for Steiner. Design in the seventies was all about going beyond the strict conventions of modernism, with the exploration of the different qualities of materials, use of pop colors, and peculiar & symbolic appearances as outcome. In the design world of the 1970s, it was commonplace to see sectional sofas featuring a soft, organic layout and rendered in the most vibrant colors. Noted designers such as Pierre Paulin, Olivier Mourgue, Mario Bellini, Rossi di Albizzate, Tito Agnoli, Verner Panton, Cini Boeri, Gaetano Pesce, and Joe Colombo, to name a few, contributed to this tradition. This seamless seating system consists of six elements, which gives the opportunity to create different configurations. The colors used for the seats are red, burgundy and purple. The curvaceous construction of the element, accentuated by the vertical lining in the upholstery, evokes the image of a cascade. Maximum comfort is guaranteed by means of the thick seating cushions and the large seats. Kwok Hoi Chan (1920-1990) was an emblematic figure of international design who emigrated from Hong Kong to England and France. In France, he paired up with the Parisian manufacturer Steiner. Even though Kwok Hoi Chan was deeply involved in European and international design he has always stayed loyal to his Chinese origins. His furniture resembles an imaginary alphabet borrowed from Chinese calligraphy. His trademark is a suspended tubular frame which is combined with an organic shaped seating. Please note that we advise reupholstery for these elements, since they show damages in the fabric. Reupholstery is possible before shipping by our experienced craftsman and -women in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery is possible as well.
