About the Item

This refined early 19th century Continental settee, possibly Austrian in origin, reflects the elegant simplicity of neoclassical seating furniture of the period. The frame is crafted in mahogany with clean, tapering legs and slightly splayed back supports, a form that conveys both balance and lightness. Its restrained silhouette and gentle sweep of the sides speak to the neoclassical taste for graceful yet practical furnishings. The settee is upholstered in a later red fabric patterned with a small-scale repeating motif, complementing the crisp lines of the frame. The tight seat and upright back make it well-suited for hallways, parlors, or drawing rooms where style and formality were prized. Compact in scale, it offers versatility as both an accent piece and functional seating. This settee carries distinguished provenance from the Collection of Barbara Rothschild Michaels and Roger Michaels of New York City and Ossining, New York, with many items in the family collection having descended from the Estate of Herbert and Nannette Rothschild. It remains in nice antique condition, consistent with age and normal use, with an older repair to the left rear leg and some minor fading to the upholstery. A charming and authentic furnishing, it would bring historical character to a traditional interior or serve as an elegant counterpoint in a modern design scheme. 35h x 60w x 28d Seat Height 19
