About the Item

SATURDAY SALE Antique circa 1910 reproduction of the Duke of Leeds double chair from Hornby Castle, as illustrated in The History of English Furniture by Percy MacQuoid, 1905. William & Mary form parcel gilt and dark green polychromed walnut double-chair settee covered in vintage pale green Fortuny De Medici cotton damask with metallic overlay. Arched rectangular double chair back with padded sides and over-scrolling arms, double rectangular loose cushion seat above a scalloped seat rail carved with bead and reel, on baluster legs joined by arched stretchers. Amazingly fantastical spiral corkscrew elements protruding from the sides of the upper wings, indicating the Venetian Gothic influence. A similar pair of settees were part of the murder scene in the BBC's 2005 Agatha Christie Poirot mystery "Cards on the Table" (see image 20) Imagine this settee across from a pair of Arturo Pani wingback chairs, Mexico, 1950s. Ref: The Age of Walnut- by Percy MacQuoid. Plates illustrated by Shirley Slocombe. Published by Laurence & Cullen LTD, London, 1905 and G.P Putnam’s Sons, New York, 1905.
