About the Item

French giltwood and tapestry five-piece salon suite Louis XVI style, circa 1890. Comprising a canape and four fauteuils upholstered in French Aubusson tapestry's depicting children and animals in a pastoral scene. The canape (sofa) 41" high x 64" wide x 24" deep The fauteuils (chairs) 40" high x 26" wide x 21" deep The condition of the furniture is sound however the tapestry has areas of wear and splits that can be seen in the pictures. Beauvais Tapestry panels mid-18th century style, 19th century execution Tapestry weave with wool and silk pattern wefts Panels depicting selected fables of Jean de la Fontaine Menuiserie (Carved Wood Frames) with Aubusson Tapestry Backs and Seats The tapestry chair backs depict generic peasant maidens and a youth in their romanticized rustic attire. They are strictly decorative and non-narrative. There is one exception: the back of the settee depicts peasants at the time of the grape harvest who have captured a diminutive fox with an oversized appetite for ripe grapes. This refers to Jean de la Fontaine’s fable (one of 243) of the Fox and the Grapes. Among the armchair seating panels, we have the Stag who sees his reflection in the water and the dog who drops his prey, mistaking his shadow for something more. The decoration of swags, tassels and acanthus ovals is purely in the mid-18th century French Rococo manner. Beauvais during the 18th century had several estimable designers, among them Francois Boucher and they are definitely in his style, although the original cartoons are not from his hand. Jean Baptiste Oudry was the most accomplished animal artist of the period and it is most likely that he had a significant role in the design of our tapestry panels. Earlier designs were reused in the 19th century and it is probable that those on our furniture are among those revivals. Larger seating ensembles illustrated more fables, but some never appeared in tapestry seating form. Size: canape 3'5 x W 5'4, fauteuils 3'4 x 2'2.

Antique French Aubusson Rug, circa 1890, 8' x 9'
Located in New York, NY
Antique French Aubusson rug, circa 1890. Aubusson carpets are pile less and tapestry woven from that town to the southwest of Paris, by a group of independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical or Victorian. They are virtually never “oriental”. The pattern wefts are wool with silk and/or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Sizes tend toward the squarish and pieces 30’ by 30’ are not unknown. The 18th-19th century French clients included the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. Aubusson carpets were also exported to England and are often to be found in country houses. Light colors are the most popular and dark toned pieces are very rare. Besides traditional Louis furniture...
