About the Item

17th century South Yorkshire oak backstool, the two scroll carved arched back to panelled seats over turned and railed under-frame. English, circa 1660-1680 By repute the carved centre of the back rails represents the head of Charles I. This emblem was a covert way of sharing the owner’s support for the Crown and the Royalist Cause. The picture of Charles I shows the similarity to the carving in the stool back. Photo of the engraving of King Charles I, by M. van der Gucht, after Anthony Van Dyck. The Welcome Collection Ref: 2033775i.
