About the Item
A most charming Italian hand painted, carved, and woven cane side chair with beautiful heavily worn and distressed original patina perfection over the whole.
Born in the Venetian region of north-eastern Italy in the late 18th / early 19th century, hand-crafted in elegant Louis XV style, richly decorated in Chinoiserie Rococo taste, having a shaped top rail crest over caned back with vasiform splat flanked by yellow painted stiles featuring polychromed floral decoration in bas-reliefs, above a caned seat with gently scalloped shaped and decorated apron, rising elegantly on cabriole legs terminating in slipper feet.
Perfectly imperfect, having a charming flawed beauty that makes it easy to find wisdom in natural simplicity, with warm, mellow coloring, garished in fanciful Asian figurals, landscape scenes, and floral decoration lacquered and in raised relief carvings throughout.
Venice / Veneto region Italy; circa 1770-1805.
Dimensions (approx):
40.5" High, 21" Wide, 18" Deep
Seat height: 17.5"
Seat width: 21" front, 16" back
Good original condition. The antique accent chair presents well, with nicely aged patina, enhanced by heavy yet highly desirable losses to finish, most notably to splat. Heavily worn, weathered, organically distressed, chippy paint finish with outstanding craquelure.
Good quality solid wood construction, the chair is structurally sound, functional, and ready for use, having a slight wobble, heavy wear to finish consistent with age and indicative of use. Nothing that detracts from the aesthetics or functionality, but only adds to the overall antique authenticity, sophisticated elegance, rustic warmth, and European Old World Mediterranean charm of this great chair.
