About the Item

A strikingly attractive and rare pair of oak Arts & Crafts hall, side or dining chairs by an English master-craftsman in wonderful vintage condition. Made by renowned craftsman Rupert Griffiths in his Derbyshire workshop, most likely in the 1950s, these beautiful and fabulously distinctive chairs were crafted using the finest solid ‘tiger’ oak and centuries-old handcrafting methods to create a robust, visually stunning, and wonderfully distinctive pair. However these versatile chairs are used, they will enhance any interior with their gorgeous rich colouring, characterfully shapely design and superbly ornate-yet-rustic quality. Exuding traditional bygone craftsmanship and enchanting when viewed from any angle, these beautifully designed and crafted chairs feature fabulously sculptural and shapely single-piece solid oak tapering back rests with lovely heart-shaped handle cut-outs, attractive wavy edges and spectacular golden striations to the stripy ‘tiger’ oak grain, both front and back. These versatile chairs have generously sized, solid and unusual semi-circular single-piece oak saddle seats set on an oak frame-work and raised upon square-cut front legs with decorative chamfered corners. They have sturdy front stretchers featuring eye-catching fluted motif carvings and have pegged joints throughout, displaying their traditional Arts & Crafts woodworking heritage. They feature large central square stretchers running from front to back, which support the attractive vase-shaped back legs, again with eye-catching, traditional pegged fixings. All in all these are a stunning pair of wonderfully eye-catching and expertly crafted chairs, which will add a unique look and traditional English craftsmanship to any setting. THE MAKER Rupert Griffiths, inspired by traditional English furniture design and the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th Century, crafted and sold his furniture through top retail stores including Harrods from 1946 until 1968, since when his son Nigel has taken on the mantle of producing fine oak Griffiths furniture from their Derbyshire workshop. CONDITION These superior quality chairs are in excellent condition. Solid, sturdy and made to last using the best traditional methods and excellent quality solid ‘tiger’ oak, they have only very minor to-be-expected signs to show their not inconsiderable age. Overall they’re a visually stunning, wonderfully crafted and very versatile pair and if well looked after should be just breathtaking for generations to come - please see the photos.
