About the Item

Pair of Chairs by Lajos Kozma, Walnut, Hungary, Circa 1925 This rare pair of walnut side chairs by the Hungarian architect and designer Lajos Kozma (1884–1948) offers a unique vision of modernist furniture, blending folkloric fantasy with Expressionist intensity. Designed around 1925, they exemplify Kozma’s reinterpretation of Rococo filtered through Central European ornamentation and the exaggerated language of Expressionist form. The sculpted backrests, with their intricate, calligraphic tracery, evoke a fairy-tale ambiance, oscillating between graphic abstraction and the lyrical sensibility of folk carving. The generously curved cabriole legs and volumetric seats reinforce this dreamlike quality, while the dark walnut lends warmth and gravity. Kozma’s furniture is seldom seen outside of institutional collections. These chairs are exceptionally rare survivals of Hungarian modernist design between the wars—unmistakably rooted in the vibrant intellectual and artistic context of 1920s Budapest. Rather than a revival, Kozma offers a liberated reimagining—a theatrical staging of Expressionist Rococo forms pushed to the threshold of modern design. Like his contemporaries in the Wiener Werkstätte and beyond, Kozma fused architecture, interiors, and objects into a total aesthetic experience. These chairs stand as rare, poetic objects—enigmatic and sculptural—rooted in the cultural complexity of 1920s Budapest, where craft, fantasy, and progressive design converged in a moment of brilliant originality. Exhibited in: "Berlin Deko" at Brian Kish Gallery, New York, 2015 "Berlin Deko Tea Room" by Fernando Santangelo at Holiday House, New York, 2016. Literature: Berlin Deko, Markus Winter and Don Freeman, Stuttgart, 2025, p. 30. Judith Koós, Kozma Lajos munkássága, Budapest 1975, p. 131.
