About the Item

Gerrit Rietveld (1888–1964) was a key figure in the De Stijl movement, known for his radical use of geometry, line, and primary colour. A trained cabinetmaker, he brought a sculptural sensibility to furniture design, reducing forms to their most essential planes. The Steltman Chair was his final design, created for a jewellery store in The Hague. Made entirely from solid planks arranged in an asymmetrical yet balanced composition, it reflects De Stijl’s commitment to clarity, order, and abstraction. This mirrored pair was originally placed on either side of a display case where customers selected wedding rings.
