About the Item

Side chairs circa 1830 having curved rectangular crest rails over conforming horizontal splats with carved vining decorations. The oversized tight upholstered seats raised on square taping legs and terminating on spade feet. Condition: Some with minor losses; the seats in need of new upholstery. Provenance: Originally from the estate of W. Warren Barbour (1888-1943) born in Monmouth County, NJ. His father, Colonel William W. Barbour was founder of the US branch of The Barbour Linen Thread Co., with offices in NYC and mills in Paterson, NJ. WW Barbour attained renown for a variety of accomplishments. In 1910, he became the Amateur Heavy Weight Champion of the US and Canada. Through his brief career as a boxer, he became friends with Teddy Rosevelt because of his love of the sport and was an official time-keeper for the famous Dempsey-Willard fight in 1919. In 1917, he became President job the Linen Thread Co., served on the Borough Council of Rumson, NJ, mayor of Rumson in 1923. Appointed to US senate in 1931 and held that office until his death in 1943. His contributions as a US Senator as well documented in the Congressional Library and the Biographical Directory of the US Congress. When not in Washington DC, Barbour lived in the beautiful Beaux Arts home, "Hilden" in Locust, NJ. The stately home sat on a promontory overlooking the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers.
