About the Item

A pair of Elsie De Wolfe Louis XV style slipper chairs from the early 20th century, with cabriole legs and striped salmon upholstery. Made in the USA during the early years of the 20th century, each of this pair of slipper chairs, created by actress turned designer Elsie De Wolfe, features a slightly slanted camelback, connected to a seat adorned with a serpentine front. The back and seat both showcase an upholstery in used condition, typical of De Wolfe's taste. The chairs are raised on a painted base with gilt accents, made of four Louis XV style cabriole legs resting on scrolling feet. The ensemble boasts a nicely weathered patina revealing its age. Slipper chairs were traditionally used in bedrooms to help ladies get dressed. Born in New York City, de Wolfe was acutely sensitive to her surroundings from her earliest years and became one of the first female interior decorators, replacing dark and ornate Victorian décor with lighter, simpler styles and uncluttered room layouts. She belonged to a time when everything was still subtle, explains designer Vincent Darré. There remained the spirit of the salon dear to the 18th century from which Elsie drew inspiration for her decorations. She favored round and refined shapes. Preferring a brighter scheme of decorating than was fashionable in Victorian times, she helped convert interiors featuring dark, heavy draperies and overly ornate furnishings into light, soft, more feminine rooms. She made a feature of mirrors, which both illuminated and expanded living spaces, brought back into fashion furniture painted in white or pale colors, and indulged her taste for Chinoiserie, chintz, green and white stripes, wicker, trompe-l'œil effects in wallpaper, and trelliswork motifs, suggesting the allure of the garden. As de Wolfe claimed: "I opened the doors and windows of America, and let the air and sunshine in." Her inspiration came from 18th-century French and English art, literature, theater, and fashion. She liked neutral tones so much that she exclaimed « It’s beige, just my color?!" when she discovered the Parthenon in Greece. With their elegant Louis XV style lines and soft colors, this pair of Elsie De Wolfe slipper chairs will make for a great addition to any bedroom!
