About the Item

A 1940s Jens Risom for Knoll Associates Inc. Vostra Easy chair upholstered in a cream, golden and blue damask fabric. Unconventional and memorable, it was the epitome of a new departure in high design, and remains an example of the timeless quality of good design to this day. This gorgeous example is one of the finest original Knoll pieces. It is generally well preserved and seemingly all original. This chair retains its original label, marked Knoll Associates Inc. 601 Madison Avenue. Please see photos for condition. Florence and Hans Knoll moved to that 601 Madison Avenue in 1942 and remained there only for a handful of years before transitioning to another location. Dimensions: 30"h x 21"w x 26"d Seat Depth 20"h Seat Height: 16.5"d Condition: Good. The chair frame is very solid. The legs show wear consistent with age and use with a few nicks and scratches. Original label affixed to back leg. The fabric is generally clean and well preserved all over, save for the front edge of the seat and the right side of the seat. Both areas show wear. Please see photographs re condition. Shows well. About: The story of the Vostra goes back to a design by Danish-American designer Jens Risom in the 1940s, then a little beechwood chair with strap covers. When Hans Knoll, Walter Knoll’s son, emigrated to the USA and became independent, he included this piece of furniture in his collection and including an upholstered version. Later Walter Knoll developed it into his own design with tubular steel feet and elaborate upholstery. In 1949 the classic went into production. Provenance: Property from the collection of a Pennsylvania lady
