American Classical Reeded Mahogany Antique Sofa Settee, Baltimore, circa 1820

About the Item

A work crafted of a dense and beautiful mahogany, the surface throughout has taken on a burnished ruby hue from years of gentle use. The unrelenting use of bold reeding throughout the crest, arms, balusters, front rail of the apron and legs is distinct to Baltimore, Maryland and lends a certain drama to the rectangular form. Even the panels over each leg are beautifully reeded and framed in raised molding of the solid. The upholstered arms are exposed along the upper edge, this raised over ring-turned swollen balusters that drop into the apron. Usually this form is quite a bit wider, but the sofa was expertly shortened during the late 19th/early 20th century to result in a more petite form suitable for smaller rooms. It rests over beautifully turned legs over stump toes terminating inside of original castor wheels - the center back legs are left undecorated, allowing the craftsman to focus only on the areas that would be most visible. A gorgeous piece that will be a most striking period object when it has been recovered in a new fabric. Condition report: Frame appears to have been expertly shortened at some point in the 19th century, note the diagonal slices central in the crest and apron. Around the same time strengthening blocking was added behind apron. Upholstery in poor condition, stained and must be changed. Early beautifully patinated surfaces throughout, original castors; some wear/chipping to veneer on sides of apron and age appropriate wear to columns/legs.
