About the Item

FDB Møbler, sofa, solid oak, fabric, Denmark, 1940s Crafted by the Danish furniture company FDB Møbler, this sofa reminds of the Shaker-line by Børge Mogensen. FDB and Mogensen aimed to revolutionize furniture design by prioritizing the needs of people, crafting pieces that were both rational and understated. Their creations boasted clean lines and simple constructions, perfectly suited for industrial production. They envisioned light, multifunctional furniture that would enhance the efficiency of modern living spaces. Inspired by the legacy of Kaare Klint, Mogensen frequently drew from traditional furniture styles, refining them into contemporary pieces. The sofa exemplifies this philosophy, featuring an open-frame structure with crisp lines and meticulously considered proportions. Its reclined backrest, armrests, and plush cushions ensure exceptional comfort. The natural tone and grain pattern of the oak imbue the piece with a serene and timeless elegance, making it a harmonious addition to any home. Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) was a Danish designer. His designs are defined by being high-quality, simple and functional. Mogensen can be seen as a democratic and idealistic designer. He aimed to solve basic problems in residential living. This meant that he designed for the middle-class and everyday use instead of for the more exclusive costumer. Contrary to his contemporaries in other countries such as Le Corbusier, Mogensen did not work with new modern materials such as steel and glass. Instead, he chose to work with tested materials such as leather and wood. Being trained by Kaare Klint, he was very focused on the human body and his ideal was to create comfortable furniture, not furniture that would end up in a museum. His designs are therefore honest, functional, simple and production friendly. Mogensen was extremely productive: hundreds of his designs went into production in his lifetime. Kindly note that the piece is in good condition with some signs of age and use, including some spots on the wooden frame.
