About the Item

This monumental platform boomerang sofa, designed by Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates in the 1960s, embodies the drama, innovation, and sculptural elegance that defined the golden age of American modernism. Measuring over ten feet in length, the sofa’s sweeping boomerang curve and low-slung walnut platform transform it from a piece of seating into an architectural event within a room. This two-tone fabric combination has a timeless designer style. The fabric appears to be original. It is in such great condition, we are not sure if it was recovered. The nubby blue wool contrasts perfectly with the striped back cushions and throw pillows. The loose cushions have a soft, woven tweed with multi-tone vertical striping. The blue body has only minor pilling and wear on the button tufts. Design & Form The sofa’s walnut base extends outward in a graceful arc, grounding the plush seating above with sculptural integrity. The exaggerated curve is not only visually commanding but also designed for conversation, encouraging fluid social interaction in a space. The platform form—at once monumental and minimalist—anchors the sofa while creating an impression of floating upholstery above a sculptural frame. It is this daring juxtaposition of mass and airiness that makes Pearsall’s boomerang designs so enduringly iconic. Restoration This example has been carefully restored. The walnut base has been refinished in hand-rubbed oil to revive its rich, natural glow and highlight its dramatic grain. Every detail has been attended to with respect for Pearsall’s original design, balancing historical authenticity with contemporary usability. About Adrian Pearsall A trained architect, Adrian Pearsall (1925–2011) brought structural daring and sculptural creativity to American furniture design. Founding Craft Associates in Pennsylvania in 1952, he quickly became known for designs that pushed beyond conventional modernism. Pearsall’s furniture combined architectural geometry with organic curves, often built on dramatic walnut bases that blurred the line between furniture and sculpture. His work is frequently compared to contemporaries like Vladimir Kagan and George Nakashima, yet Pearsall’s aesthetic is distinct—bold, theatrical, and unafraid of scale. Today, his pieces are recognized as icons of American mid-century design, held in high regard by collectors and designers alike. Why It Matters: Among Pearsall’s many designs, the boomerang platform sofa stands out as one of his most dramatic and collectible. Its combination of scale, sculptural walnut base, and daring curvature make it an anchor piece in any interior—equally at home in a modernist residence, a gallery, or a curated design collection. Spectacular, massive time capsule quality Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates boomerang sofa. What’s better than vintage original? Upholstery that actually works for today’s decorators. Tulip Group Sofa in Rosewood by K M Wilkins for G-Plan of England
By Percival Lafer, Thonet, G Plan Furniture, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Chattanooga, TN
his extraordinary three-seater G-Plan sofa, conceived by K.M. Wilkins for the celebrated “Tulip Group,” is a rare rosewood rendition of an otherwise teak-centric line—and its presence is nothing short of enchanting. Originally purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970 by its only owners, it has remained in immaculate condition, carrying with it the quiet confidence of provenance and preservation. The design radiates sculptural grace. Gently molded rosewood panels unfurl like a blossoming tulip, their curves echoing natural form and mid-century modern lyricism. Against the sumptuous rosewood’s amber-red glow, the chrome Magnum Orbit casters shine like modern accents, marrying warmth with utility. Luxuriously soft velvet envelops the frame—an elusive tone hovering between olive-green and taupe-brown—that shifts subtly with light and angle, offering a tactile interplay as captivating as the design’s silhouette. Thoughtful restoration has ensured that elegance is matched by durability. The original webbing had troughed with age, so the sofa was completely disassembled. New industrial-grade 3-inch elastic strapping was installed, preserving the original foam while enhancing comfort for decades to come. Each rosewood panel and chrome detail was cleaned and polished, bringing renewed clarity—while a discreet wood crack on the left rosewood panel was expertly stabilized. Beyond its sculptural and tactile appeal, this sofa is woven into the narrative of British mid-century modern design. The “Tulip Group” represents K.M. Wilkins’ dedication to organic forms and domestic sculpture, and this rosewood example is an exceptionally rare embodiment of that philosophy. This piece is not just furniture—it is a collector’s statement, a living relic of design history, and a tactile centerpiece intended to be both admired and lived in. Whether in a gallery-quality space or a refined lounge, it asserts character and comfort in equal measure. Matching pair of lounge chairs also available and sold separately (see last pic). This incredible sofa was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept it in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often misattributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. The sofa hovers on its original Magnum Orbit chrome...

Adrian Pearsall Faux Snow Leopard Cloud Sofa for Craft Associates Fully Restored
By Craft Associates, Adrian Pearsall
Located in Chattanooga, TN
This is not just a sofa—it’s an iconic statement of mid-century modern fantasy. The Adrian Pearsall Cloud Sofa, reimagined as an expansive sectional, embodies ultimate comfort and sculptural boldness. Upholstered in opulent, plush leopard-patterned faux fur, the design combines tactile luxury with Pearsall’s signature fluid silhouette. Crafted by Craft Associates in the early 1970s, the original Cloud Sofa features an organic, continuous form—like a gentle wave of plush seating—supported by a platform base of solid walnut and hidden black plinth. This sectional adapts that form into an enveloping L-shape perfect for both lounging and dramatic spatial presence. The ultra-soft fur, in cream, taupe, and charcoal tones, wraps the sinuous curves, offering sensory warmth that visually pops against the warm walnut trim. The continuous cushion and integrated chaise allow versatility while retaining iconic Cloud geometry. What makes this sectional extraordinary is the way the leopard fur elevates the Cloud’s iconic form with plush, textural opulence, transforming it into a museum-quality centerpiece. The sofa has been fully restored, including a refined walnut base with a rich reddish hue and flawlessly renewed upholstery, ensuring both comfort and lasting beauty. It remains an object of functional elegance, holding its form as both a centerpiece of comfort and a sculptural anchor in any space. Designer & Context: Adrian Pearsall (1925–2011), originally an architect, founded Craft Associates in 1952 and quickly developed a design vocabulary defined by bold curvature, platform bases, and playful luxury. The Cloud Sofa, created in the 1970s, stands as one of his most celebrated forms—its serpentine back and floating base embodying leisure crafted with spectacle and gravity. Pearsall’s work remains sought after for its structural daring and dramatic presence. Ideal for collectors of rare mid-century American design, homes or galleries craving sumptuous sculptural comfort, and interiors driven by form, material lushness, and personality, this sectional is a rare union of Pearsall’s design legacy and decadent materials—embodying modernist boldness and tactile indulgence. A true jaw-dropper from every angle. The new faux snow leopard fur...
