"MT2" Sculptural Monobloc Sofa Designed by Ron Arad for Driade

About the Item

"MT2" is an iconic sculptural polyethylene monobloc sofa, designed by Ron Arad and manufactured by Driade, sand white colored outside and red, lilac, black or violet colored inside. Red colored inside version only is available in quick ship. Indoor and outdoor use. DIMENSIONS: D. 33.6", W. 70.8", H. 33.4", Seat H. 16.5" “MT” is an acronym defining this collection designed by Ron Arad. It's pronounced “empty” in English and “vacuum” with its emptiness is actually the key element of this project. Its volume is hollowed out and exhibits provocatively its inner space, finished in different colours. This piece of design can be hollowed out thanks to a double step making sequence of rotational molding. First of all, polyethylene of outer shell color is placed in a mold. Once this layer has created, second color is inserted and adheres to the first one, without merging the two polymers, although this process takes place in blast furnaces. Once extracted from the mold, a five-axes laser will cut off the lateral extremities of the product, revealing the two-tone look of this piece of design. MT collection also features a rocking chair, a real rarity in the contemporary design world from a typological point of view. RON ARAD, born in Tel Aviv in 1951, educated at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and later at the Architectural Association in London, co-founded with Caroline Thorman the design and production studio One Off in 1981 and later, in 1989, Ron Arad Associates architecture and design practice. In 2008 Ron Arad Architects was established alongside Ron Arad Associates. From 1994 to 1999 he established the Ron Arad Studio, design and production unit in Como, Italy. He was Professor of Design Product at the Royal College of Art in London up until 2009. Ron Arad was awarded the 2011 London Design Week Medal for design excellence and became a Royal Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2013. Ron Arad’s constant experimentation with the possibilities of materials such as steel, aluminum or polyamide and his radical re-conception of the form and structure of furniture has put him at the forefront of contemporary design and architecture. Alongside his limited edition studio work, Arad designs for many leading international companies including Kartell, Vitra, Moroso, Fiam, Driade, Alessi, Cappellini, Cassina, WMF and Magis among many others.

"Tokyo-Pop" White or Black Monobloc Sofa Designed by T. Yoshioka for Driade
By Driade, Tokujin Yoshioka
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Tokyo-Pop" is a white or black anthracite polyethylene monobloc iconic sofa, designed by Tokujin Yoshioka and manufactured by Driade. White version only is available in quick ship. Indoor and outdoor use. DIMENSIONS: D. 30.7", W. 69.5", H. 29.7", Seat H. 16.5" Tokyo-Pop collection was Tokujin Yoshioka's debut on the international design scene in 2002. Now he's considered as one of the masters of contemporary design. With his set of sofa, armchair and especially chaise longue and stool he seems to ignore the trivial qualities of rotational plastic molding and turn them into real sculptures featuring unforgettable and unusual forms. TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA, born in Japan in 1967 and winner of many awards, with pieces on display at the MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt in New York, the Victoria & Albert in London and the Vitra Design Museum, trained along with Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, opened his own studio in 2000, and has worked with Japanese and international companies such as Hermès, Toyota, BMW and Swarovski, designing showrooms and installations. As a result of the success of the Honey-pop paper chair in 2001, he began establishing increasingly close links with the world of interior design, developing projects for Driade, Moroso and Kartell, amongst the others. The main feature of his creations is their poetic, light, dreamlike quality. His products, interiors and installations are the result of painstaking, complex research carried out on simple materials, combined with experimental technology. The awards he won include Design Miami...
