About the Item

Reversed process stool by Philipp Aduatz Unique Dimensions: D 45 x W 45 x H 47 cm Materials: Wood, metal, polystyrene-foam, "papier mâché", resin, lacquer. Each piece looks different   With the concept of the Reversed Process Furniture, Philipp Aduatz is trying to rethink and reinvent his process of designing objects by flipping the order of the design stages. His aim is to create objects with a distinct sculptural character by using an experimental approach to the design process. The classic design process Usually, Aduatz starts the design process with an initial idea or a vision followed by sketches and first attempts at visualizations of that idea. After that, there is a realization process involving the development and construction of prototypes and models. This development phase has the aim to achieve the realization of the initial idea with the most possible precision. Finally, computer data, plans, or models are sent to a company that produces the object in a larger or smaller run or he produces the object by himself in his studio. The reversed design process The Reversed Design Process has the aim to reverse Aduatz's classic process of designing furniture. Here he starts the process not with an initial idea or vision of a prospective design but with a factory-produced object that is purchased in a store. In the second phase, material is added or subtracted from the object. There is no limitation in the selection of materials or tools Aduatz uses; finally, he covers the geometry with paper-mâché, a very versatile material to shape large geometries. In this phase he does not have an idea or vision of the final shape, he works on a concept to create a closed shape through an experimental workflow. The finish of the object is finally made by combining dull and high-glossy shapes within one object. Aduatz decided for this finish in the final phase to insinuate the contrast of high-glossy perfection from industrial finished surfaces on one hand and to rough and craftsmen-looking-like dull surfaces on the other hand. After the final finish of the object, the idea of the object with its final shape appears now at the end instead of the beginning- exactly reversed as in his classic design process. Vienna-based Designer Philipp Aduatz (born 1982) creates limited-edition functional objects that are highly sculptural in nature. Working with innovative materials and fabrication technologies, Aduatz is very much influenced by scientific matters such as chemistry, physics, and material technologies. His process combines traditional craft concepts and techniques with cutting-edge implements such as 3D printing, 3D laser scanning, CNC milling, and Rapid Prototyping. The experimentation with different materials and their behavior is an important part of his research at the intersection of design and sculpture. Greatly influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Tony Cragg, the designer aims to develop a distinct language of form in each of his pieces, encouraging a new discourse between the object and its user or viewer.

Grace Prince Held Absence No.6 Low stool - UK, 2025 - AP 1, Edition of 4
Located in London, GB
Painted steam-bent wood. Almost animalian in its expression, this stool is crafted from steam-bent waste wood, rendering each in the edition unique. Below a curved split seat, two roughly-hewn legs are held in composition with a more conventional post. The piece is part of Held Absence, Grace Prince’s largest furniture collection to date addressing a long-held fascination with absence and fragility. The pieces develop the designer’s free, gestural approach into six assemblages in bronze, steel and wood. Designed exclusively for Béton Brut, the works emerged from a period spent living in a traditional house just north of Kyoto. The collection is handmade to order in 12 weeks. Grace Prince (born in London, 1992) is a multidisciplinary designer based between Zürich, Milan and London. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, she worked as the assistant designer to Vincenzo De Cotiis...
