The carving of a stool is an exceptional honor and when an Asante carver is commissioned to carve a stool, it means the patron believes the carver meets a set of rigorous qualifications. The greater the respect and the higher the status, the larger the stool and the more elaborate it's design. A king's stool was, moreover, identified with his political position and understood as a symbol of the unity of the nation. Always carved from a single piece of wood, these stools often display elaborate inlaid metal decorations or, as in this example, the brass cladding is enhanced by incised geometrical designs. Although often rendered somewhat abstractly, this particular stool clearly depicts the royal couple and thereby evokes the Akan model of statecraft (one king surrounded by chiefs) and the cosmos (the four cardinal points and central sun).
An Akan ruler's stool occupies a place at the very center of his personal and political life. It is a potent indication of royal patronage, for only those chiefs considered sufficiently loyal to the king are granted permission to use them. A leader's stool is so integrally linked to his identity that his death is described by the phrase "a stool has fallen."
