Swiss Wooden Quadripod Stool, Switzerland ca 1960s

About the Item

Form and function collide in this Swiss stool, a piece of furniture that is often underestimated. Designers define stools as jewels and statements in a space, and taking practicality into account, this stool is perfect to add visual interest to any space. From Charlotte Perriand to Axel Einar Hjorth, wooden stools have been staples in European design history. Switzerland is less talked about when it comes to mid-century modern design, for many people, it is basically synonymous with Helvetica—the very name of which in fact means “Swiss” (in Latin, Switzerland was the Confederatio Helvetica)—which was designed in 1957 and hit the market in 1960. However, Swiss design and designers past and present express and cultivate a unique identity based on minimalism, quality, functionality and innovation. This stool is on the more minimalistic edge of the Swiss design scale, with rustic details. The most outstanding is unquestionably the gouged seat as an aesthetic choice. The marks of the chisel are naturally unique, making this stool one-of-a-kind. The tenon and mortise joints are very appealing as well, holding the fours legs firmly. The combination of the quality woodworking and the minimalist design makes this stool a modern piece that fits easily into any space. It has rustic elements and a modern edge that is impossible to reproduce. Being functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, this stool is a great addition to set the tone of a space. The design is strong but subtle, with expert craftsmanship, thanks to which it can add depth as well as functionality to a space. This stool is marked “Jufa Beschäftigung”, presumably the manufacturer based in Basel. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Small scratches and marks on the wood. Rauni Peippo "Apila" Stool for Stockmann Orno, Finland 1960s
By Orno Stockmann
Located in Utrecht, NL
This famous pine stool by Finnish interior designer Rauni Peippo is the most famous model from the ‘Apila’ set, that contains a table and bar stools as well. It is one of those models that is immediately recognizable thanks to its shape. Finnish design is appreciated around the world for its minimalistic appearance, playful forms and strict functionalism. After Finland became independent, a dialogue with nature was to become the prime force in the ongoing evolution of Finnish design. This relationship with nature was much in evidence in 20th century Finnish design, which actively expanded on the metaphors and motifs therein. This progression is evident in this iconic stool. “Apila” means “clover” in Finnish, which comes as no surprise; the four leaf clover-shaped seat is carved from pine wood, enhancing the already organic impression of this model. It is infinitely stylish, with sleek tapered legs that counterbalance the round, soft edges of the body. The design dates to the mid-century and the first manufacturer was Stockmann Orno, a manufacturer with a history that dates back to 1862. (It is still the largest department store in the Nordic countries.) This stool was previously misattributed to fellow Finnish designer, Lisa Johansson-Pape, but is now well-documented. Thanks to its sturdy construction and undeniable style, this ‘Apila’ stool...
