About the Item

Jean Prouvé Swivel Office Chair, metal and wood, France, 1928 Jean Prouvé designed this swivel office chair in 1928, introducing a utilitarian yet radical approach to early industrial seating. Manufactured in France, this rare model features a tripod base in lacquered steel with a height-adjustable seat and backrest in steam-bent oak. Its compact, mechanically expressive structure reflects the engineer-designer’s pursuit of architecture in miniature. The design anticipates Prouvé’s later typologies of work-oriented furniture, balancing technical rigor with minimalist clarity. The adjustable screw mechanism exemplifies his belief in honest construction and mechanical logic, while the slender metal shaft and tripod legs provide both stability and formal tension. Every part of the chair is exposed and legible—no effort is made to hide function beneath decoration. Although conceived independently, this model resonates with parallel innovations by German and Scandinavian designers, such as Peter Behrens’ Olympia chair or AB Odelberg-Olsen’s height-adjustable solutions for Knoll. It also aligns with the material sensibility of Pierre Jeanneret’s utilitarian designs for Chandigarh, and with the rigorous, almost architectural presence of Le Corbusier’s early tubular furniture developed with Charlotte Perriand. The chair’s structural clarity and exposed mechanics also share a conceptual kinship with the furniture of Pierre Chapo, who similarly approached joinery and geometry as expressions of rational construction. In this sense, Prouvé’s design belongs to a lineage of designers who challenged conventional typologies through formal economy, material integrity, and a profound belief in the ethics of making.
