About the Item

This impressive English chest, crafted from ebonized oak, dates from the second half of the 17th century. It reflects the characteristic design of the period, with its sober yet richly decorated façade featuring carved geometric panels and floral rosettes. The chest embodies the late Renaissance and early Baroque influences that defined English furniture of the time. Pieces like this were originally used to store household linens, fine clothing, or important documents, serving both a practical and symbolic role in the home. This example has survived with remarkable authenticity. The original iron lock and key are still present—a rarity for a piece of this age. The flat lid opens to a spacious interior that includes a small compartment, once intended for the safekeeping of valuables or smaller objects. The bottom was skillfully renewed several decades ago, ensuring the chest remains both stable and functional. In our workshop, the piece was carefully cleaned and finished with a protective wax polish, enhancing the rich, dark luster of the oak. The result is a chest that not only embodies the craftsmanship and history of 17th-century England but is also ready for use today.
