About the Item

A handsome George IV mahogany stepback bookcase, dating to around 1830, crafted in the refined neoclassical tradition of early 19th century England. The upper cabinet features striking geometric astragal glazing bars forming bold diamonds and intersecting angles, beautifully framing the original glass doors. A finely inlaid satinwood diamond-patterned frieze runs just beneath the cornice, lending the piece a subtle elegance. Inside, it offers two adjustable shelves for books, china, or display. The lower chest provides practical storage with four full-width drawers adorned with matched mahogany veneers and fitted with turned wooden knobs and working locks. The case rests on shaped bracket feet, and the drawer fronts display particularly rich, bookmatched mahogany grain. In nice antique condition with minor surface wear and finish variation consistent with age and use. A stately and versatile piece, perfect for use as a bookcase, cabinet of curiosities, or refined storage in any formal setting. 88h x 43w x 20d
