About the Item

This antique scroll shelf from Shanxi, China, dates back to the early Qing dynasty period around the 1680's. Crafted from elmwood, a durable material known for its resistance to splitting and breaking, it features an attractive grain pattern of interlocking lines that enhance its raw aesthetic appeal. Elm symbolizes longevity and simplicity, making it a revered choice in Chinese furniture. The shelf has aged beautifully, showcasing an ox-blood color that adds to its historic charm. It includes two spacious open shelves with a central support beam for storing documents and scrolls. Below are two drawers adorned with bai-tong, a brass alloy hardware, serving as decorative handles. The top panels feature motifs of the stylized Chinese character "Shou," meaning longevity, surrounded by clouds, symbolizing tranquility. The patina is exceptional an totally original. The piece would be a stunning accent in a contemporary home.
