Oak Buffet with 2 Doors and 3 Drawers by René Gabriel, 1940s
Located in PARIS, FR
Oak buffet with 2 Doors and 3 Drawers by René Gabriel, 1940s René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers. A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements. Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...

20th Century Art Nouveau Mahogany Buffet/ Cabinet by H. Bäck, Austria circa 1910
Located in Lichtenberg, AT
Beautiful early 20th century Art Nouveau buffet/ cabinet out of Austria made by the renowed company of Viennesse cabinetmaker Heinrich Bäck around 1910. The lower part provides two doors, both adorned by a fantastic looking inlayed patterns as well as a two drawers. A slightly pink/ orange shining marple plate on top and the still original facet cut mirror plate (showing aging spots/ slight scratches) in the back gives this matchless 20th century buffet a matchless appearance. The attached upper part with two facet cut glass panelled doors floats on four beautiful carved solid wooden columns, all additionally edged by polished brass applications. Two smaller compartments - veneered in fine birds eye maple - appear behind these lovely worked doors that can be wide opened. Another great highlight is the delicate silver coated floral design on the glass panels. Brazilian Modern Credenza in Hardwood & Brass finish, Jean Gillon, 1960s
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Hardwood with Brass finishes designed by Jean Gillon in the sixties in Brazil is the FIND of the year. The credenza has a rectangular structure made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, with two main legs and two support legs on each side. It has five large drawers and four doors with shelves inside. The brass finishes are located in the joints, fringes and keys. There are few reasons why this credenza is one-of-a-kind: First, the high end wood work. This piece was commissioned for a private residence in Sao Paulo and it shows. The joints, the wood carving, the smooth curves in the drawers, even the hidden toothpick support legs are superbly finished. Second, the rosewood is of the finest quality which can be seen in the wood veins, the grain and smoothness of the wood. Lastly, design. This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties. Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This credenza is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. The credenza is showcased in our showroom next to Jorge Zalszupin’s bar cart...
