A STUNNING Irish provincial piece from the Georgian Era!
Made of solid mahogany, probably imported from Cuba and the secondary woods are oak (as one would expect). Beautiful dovetailing on the inside of the drawers.
The ‘hints’ that this is in fact an ‘Irish’ piece are numerous. The ‘scallop shell’ on the center of the back gallery is unmistakably an Irish Georgian signature. The scalloped fans beneath either side of the central drawer are likewise an Irish signal. The shape, design and style is entirely consistent with similar pieces made in Cork at the end of the 18th Century.
It has it’s original brasses which is fantastic. Lions Head Ring drawer pulls and stunning urn keyhole covers/escutheons.
It has a solid gallery back splat (with central Scallop) and on both sides this ends in curved and carved scroll ends. Beneath the back splat their is a grooved plank section for holding plates etc upright.
The server/counter top area is edged and banded with a carved rope style edging.
The mid section consists of 3 drawers and 2 doors.
The piece sits on 6 legs 4 to the front and 2 to the rear. The front legs are pillars starting at the top with an acanthus style scroll … extending down to another scroll carving directly above the reeded and fluted legs. The 2 rear legs do not have the same fluting detail.
The 2 side doors open to reveal a simple one shelf storage area. One probably held a lead lined cellarette at one time.
The piece is in excellent condition for it’s age and use. There are some minor aging cracks on the counter top on the left hand side. A small loss of molding to the right lower door. No original keys but we are getting replacements made.
Bought in Surrey, England in 1999 by a Private Texas Collector and shipped to Texas. We have the original ‘sales invoice’ and the dealer sold it as a “Regency Mahogany Sideboard circa 1820’and told her that it was an English piece, for the sum of 3,400 GBP. Walnut credenza handcrafted in Italy in the mid 1700s and bleached recently. Don't let its delicate overall appearance fool you because, as my lower back can attest, this baby is heavy. This is a beautiful credenza that follow the typical italian style with slanted sides, which create small triangular storage spaces on either sides of the two main front doors and drawer. Overall the credenza is very straight in lines. The drawers have flat overlay fronts, and the doors show chamfered panels with a raised carving and are framed by flat molding. The carving and molding help giving the piece some depth and decoration. The bleaching process also provided the credenza with additional warmth, depth and decoration, by bringing out the beautiful grain and underlying colors of the wood. The top of the credenza is composed of boards with ogee edge nailed to the main case. On the inside the credenza is very spacious, providing plenty of storage space.

This remarkable Parisian credence cupboard (dining buffet - sideboard - credenza, originally used for the storing and displaying of plates and for serving at banquets), circa 1880, showcases excellent quality craftsmanship, hand-crafted solid oak construction and profuse hand carved ornamentation, exceptionally executed in medieval Gothic inspired Renaissance era style, one-piece design, having a stepped cornice over dual cabinet doors, each with central portrait plaque among foliated scrollwork arabesques in low and high relief adding distinct three-dimensional qualities, warmth and rich depth. The doors opening to a shelved interior storage compartment, above a single dovetailed drawer with relief shell-form handle. Turned drop-finials flank ornate turned bluster-form column supports adorned in intricate acanthus carvings, rising on a conforming hexagonal platform base where the flowing scrolling foliate carvings continue over stepped molding, having large lower open display shelf against paneled backplate, further rising on sculpted tapering feet. The backside of the case giving a glimpse into the quality with visible hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Hardwood with Brass finishes designed by Jean Gillon in the sixties in Brazil is the FIND of the year.
The credenza has a rectangular structure made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, with two main legs and two support legs on each side. It has five large drawers and four doors with shelves inside. The brass finishes are located in the joints, fringes and keys.
There are few reasons why this credenza is one-of-a-kind: First, the high end wood work. This piece was commissioned for a private residence in Sao Paulo and it shows. The joints, the wood carving, the smooth curves in the drawers, even the hidden toothpick support legs are superbly finished. Second, the rosewood is of the finest quality which can be seen in the wood veins, the grain and smoothness of the wood. Lastly, design. This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties.
Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture.
