About the Item

Bib.: Das Interieur 1900, Tafel 19 / Innendekoration, Mein Heim mein Stolz, Vol 11, 1900, p. 127 / Dekorative Kunst - Illustrierte Zeitschrift für angewandte Kunst, Vol 6, 1900, p. 470 / Kunst und Kunsthandwerk 1900 Heft 1 / Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration, Vol. 5, 1899-1900, Alexander Koch, Darmstadt, p. 260. For the 1900 Paris World Exhibition, Professor Josef Hoffmann designed a fully furnished dining room, including two smaller pillar cabinets. The upper cabinet doors are fitted with beveled glass and delicate muntin elements that evoke architectural window designs – a motif frequently found in Hoffmann’s work. Below this is a mirror that lends visual depth to the piece while also serving as a display surface. The lower section of the pillar cabinet consists of a drawer and a cleverly designed “dummy front” that imitates multiple drawers. This timeless piece of furniture can still be seamlessly integrated into a modern living space more than a hundred years later.
