These Kimono Tsuzura are product of 1910s-1930s (Taisho to early Showa period), made at the specialized Tsuzura craftsman shop in Kyoto.
Thin sliced bamboo are carefully chosen and tightly and beautifully hand-woven, all-handmade by skilled craftsman. The frame part are partly reinforced with iron studs for more durability. These Tsuzura-making technics are quite traditional, same as Edo era.
There's a paper label remain inside the main unit of 2 Tsuzura. It shows the item name, the shop name "Kumotsu-ya Fujii Ihei", their address in Kyoto, and even the phone number as well. (I estimate the manufacture period from this phone number).
This type of coating papers are called "Shibugami", the paper stained / coated with Kakishibu (persimmon tannin), this is a traditional technic to reinforce the paper, so the box coated with Shibugami prevents the humidity, molds / bug damages, used for the storage for something delicate, especially needs to keep away from the wet.
On the paper label inside, this coating paper is sited as "Abura Shibugami", Shibugami additionally reinforced by linseed or Kiri (paulownia) oil, it has more waterproof capability.
1 of the 3 chests has 2 extra thick bamboo lattices for both lid part and main unit, and the height is slightly bigger than the other 2.
Also, the main unit was coated with the "Abura gami" (oiled paper), not "Abura Shibugami", so the color is pale, grayish beige.
Antique Tsuzura that we still can find in Japan are, usually finished with Urushi lacquer over Shibugami coating, having hard surface in the colors of black or red, and smaller. While this Tsuzura is paper coated - I guess this was made for more ventilation ability than Urushi finished one - the color of Shibugami turned into the gradations of nuanced, terracotta-like reddish brown to darker, by the using circumstances. The tannin in Shibugami turns darker by the amount of exposure to the sunlight & air.
I see the one of wabi sabi elements enhanced in these colors together is wabi state of woven bamboos.
The item name on the label is "Gofuku-bitsu", it shows this container was made especially for Kimono storage ("Tsuzura" is more common word for storage container). For Kimono storage, the people used Tansu chest of drawers or Kouri (more simpler Kimono basket box to put in the built-in closet) at the ordinary home in this era. So probably, this specialized, larger Tsuzura - Kimono chests were owned by Kimono seller which needed to store the amounts of Kimonos safe.
