Well, even if it’s not, it’s about to feel like it because this fabulous Drexel ET Cetera cabinet is a real GIFT!!!! It is comprised of a shorter or petite (hence; SHORTY lol!!!) deep ebony black frame with wonderful Ming feet embellished with fantastic, intricately hand painted Asian scenes including figures, trees, mountains, streams, and huts or Minka’s in marvelous colors of gold, brown, and green. So beautifully hand composed by Drexel artist Edna Kaylor it feels like a vision in an Oriental paradise. The doors open with brass pulls on brass escutcheons to expose black painted finished inner doors with gold trim details. The top section bears a fixed black painted wood shelf over an open square cut-out meant for a DVD player or other items of your choice and open space for a tv or gaming monitor above if you choose to use it as an entertainment cabinet. There are three oval cut-outs on the back for cord running convenience and a lower drawer with brass hardware for anything you may need to stow away. It’s going to be fabulous if used as an entertainment cabinet in your living room, storage or linen cabinet in your spare room, or as the perfect gaming cabinet in the family room!! At 54 ½ inches tall, it’s a little shorter than a standard armoire but it could still be used as a smaller wardrobe or lingerie chest in your bedroom or dressing area … it’s perfect for smaller spaces!! This cabinet has adequate storage for anything from clothing, linens, pillows, and bedding to game components, electronics, and tv’s or monitors. Plus, it exudes an incredible Chinoiserie presence sure to make a bold statement in whatever room it occupies. And, it is made by Drexel, so you know it was created with exceptional quality and unmatchable style. Edna Lee Edge Kaylor was born on September 9th, 1929, in North Carolina. She worked for Drexel Heritage Furnishings for over 38 years drawing designs and then hand painting them on furniture pieces. She also painted reproductions for Drexel Heritage’s Biltmore House Collection. She was a perfectionist with natural talent. Mrs. Kaylor passed away at the age of 90 in 2020. Drexel Furniture Company was founded in 1903 in Drexel, North Carolina by six businessmen for a total investment of $14,000.00. Sam Huffman, one of the initial founders, managed the enterprise until his death in 1935 when his son, Robert O. Huffman took the helm. By 1950 under the younger Huffman’s leadership Drexel had grown from a small factory to a leader in furniture manufacturing. They acquired other furniture companies along the way and by the late 1950s employed 2300 workers. The 1960s had them adding industrial and hospitality furniture to their lines. In 1968 they were purchased again, and Drexel Enterprises became Drexel Heritage Furnishings, Inc. They continued to add to their styles and lines and were sold again and then in 1986 became part of Masco Corporation one of the country’s largest furniture manufacturers. They are now based in High Point, NC and operate ten factories in North Carolina and one in South Carolina and are one of the leading furniture manufacturers in the world. This cabinet is useful, versatile, and bursting with gorgeous Chinoiserie style… Plus it’s a Drexel ET Cetera piece so you know it is created with impeccable quality. Call it an entertainment or storage cabinet, call it a small wardrobe, or call it a gaming closet/cabinet but whatever you choose to call this incredible piece… you simply MUST call it YOURS!!! Whatever its use, it bears an EXQUISITE and timeless style you are sure to love for years to come! Raymond Karl Sobota (1914-2010) is an award-winning American furniture designer. He attended and obtained his degree in design from Kendall College of Art and Design in his native home of Grand Rapids, Michigan. After graduating in 1946 Sobota apprenticed with his namesake and uncle, a furniture designer as well, Karl Schmidt, who designed for Berkey and Gay Furniture Company. He apprenticed for seven years leading to his designing for Grand Rapids Bookcase and Chair Co., the Mt. Airy Furniture Co., Hekman Furniture and finally Century Furniture for whom he designed from 1952 until 1995. He designed all the company’s wood furniture during that time in total, over 150 collections. The most notable being Citation, Chin Hua, Claridge, and the Henry Ford Museum and the British National Trust collections. Sobota is credited for helping make Century Furniture the industry leader it is today. Century Furniture Company, one of the world’s largest privately owned upper-end residential furniture manufacturers, was founded in 1947 by Harley Ferguson Shuford, Sr. When first formed Century Furniture was a selling agent for local upholstery lines. But as soon as a year later Shuford had built a case goods plant in Hickory, North Carolina and that started it all. Harley Shuford along with his siblings and children acquired company after company expanding into upholstered furniture, chair manufacturing, and even a leather division. Century has made it through feast and famine in the furniture business and today retains their long-standing role as a leading force in the American home furnishings market.
