About the Item

France, ca. early 19th century. A lovely antique panetière or bread storage cabinet from Provence. Features hand carved walnut construction in the Louis XV style with finely turned spindles and quirky elongated finials. Mounted with forged iron hardware that includes the original lock and key. Bombé front and scrolled feet enhance the overall playful form. Once a fixture of any good French country kitchen, the panetière became a symbol of hospitality and bounty - yet also served a practical role in keeping freshly baked loaves safe from prying hands or critters. An intriguing decorative object, it would also be a fun way to store and display one’s favorite spirts. Professionally refurbished and in excellent antique condition with rich patina. Antique English Jacobean Oak Chest
Located in Cambridge, US
England, ca. late 17th century. A fabulous antique Jacobean or Charles II style chest on stand. Features solid oak construction with a planked top with moulded edge above two small and two large geometrically paneled drawers. Cast brass drop handles and escutcheons are most likely replacements but are period and stylistically correct. (This is not uncommon as brasses were often sold or melted down in times of conflict.) Supported by an unusual separate arched base that includes two narrow drawers and turned bun feet. An attractive survivor perfectly suited to a variety of interiors, we were drawn to the piece’s dark finish and dramatic - yet lovely - presence. From the estate of the Cambridge-born explorer, photographer, and mountaineer Henry Bradford Washburn, Jr. (1910-2007), whose family traced their roots back to Mayflower passenger William Brewster...
