About the Item

A large and stunning sculpted-front cabinet by Paul Evans (1931-1987), model PE-42, made in 1970 in his studio for Directional. The model was one of the largest case pieces made by Paul Evans studio, known as "Deep-Relief" based on the vertical compartmentalized designs with exposed welded lines. With an impressive 96.5 inches in length, the weighty piece makes an impressive sideboard or credenza, with the iconic style that straddles between a brutalism and modernism. Constructed from welded steel on the front, patchwork metal sidings and three cleft-slate tops, this cabinet features an enameled steel front with vertical relief and zigzag lines with polished welded edges, subtle textures and subdued colors, mostly in gold, bronze and yellow hues. A substantial piece with a relatively quiet and refined quality among the designer's brutalism repertoires. The cabinet features two bi-fold doors concealing one adjustable shelf in each compartment. The interior is original and painted red. Welded signature and date to the bottom of the right door as shown [Paul Evans 70]. Reference: For the same model PE-42, see Paul Evans: Designer and Sculptor, Head, pg. 59 middle illustration plate.
