About the Item
The Nevill Holt Hall Folio Cabinet
Of free standing form, constructed in satinwood, extensively adorned with engraved brass strapwork, carrying handles to the sides, the initials 'CN' and the family crest, a Bull's Head issuing from a ducal crown; rising from a plinth base, having a lockable rising top, and hinged triple panelled facia opening to reveal a fiddle back mahogany fretwork divider, and a remarkably engineered folio support and display arrangement.
Circa 1850
Dimensions: H: 38 in / 96 cm W: 58 in / 147 cm D: 20 in / 50 cm
Provenance
Nevill Holt Hall
Bearing the family crest of the Nevill Holt family and the initials "C.N." denoting a custom commission most likely for Cosmo George Nevill (1823-1896), the last heir and owner of the family seat in Leicestershire. Mention of a great house standing here goes back to the year 1302, with significant additions and alterations throughout the centuries. From 1829-1832, the great architect J.B. Papworth started introducing gothic details to the house, a theme which clearly continued in its interiors as seen on the present folio cabinet which was probably commissioned when Cosmo inherited the estate in 1848. The estate was sold at auction in 1868.

By Town & Emanuel
Located in London, GB
A William IV cabinet attributed to Town and Emmanuel
Constructed in a strongly grained olivewood and dressed with gold brass inlays and an etched and engraved brass panel; rising from a plinth base, the lockable single door having an inset panel in the manner of Jean Berain, enclosing a shelved interior, and flanked by narrow vertical conforming panels; the apron being dressed with three bronze rosettes, and the Jura Jaune marble is dressed with a three quarter arcaded brass gallery,
circa 1830
The cabinet is illustrated and discussed in Christopher Payne’s “British Furniture 1820 to 1920” published in 2023. Payne singles out the rarity of the olivewood timber used as well as the necessity for hand cutting the large marquetry panel.
