About the Item

This antique large Mizuya Tansu was crafted in the Meiji Era (1868–1912). Its simple sliding panel doors and dark, timeworn finish reflect the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi. The surface was originally finished with traditional urushi lacquer, which has darkened and softened with age, developing a warm, subdued patina. The urushi lacquer has worn away in places over time, revealing subtle variations in tone and texture that add to its wabi-sabi charm. With its generous depth and solid cedar construction, this piece was originally used in the kitchen for storing utensils and dishes. It now serves beautifully as a cupboard, sideboard, or console in a modern interior. The minimalist design and bold presence make it a striking and grounding element in any space. The piece has been carefully washed with water. The doors move smoothly. As an antique piece, minor scratches and marks may be present, each adding to its unique charm and the story it tells over time. It has been carefully inspected and remains in excellent antique condition, with natural signs of age that enhance its character. The interior dimensions are as follows (in inches, with centimeters in parentheses): Upper shelf: W62.3" × D20.5" × H12.4" (W158.2 cm × D52.0 cm × H31.5 cm) Lower shelf: W62.3" × D20.9" × H13.0" (W158.2 cm × D53.0 cm × H33.0 cm) Weight: 82.9 lbs (37.6 kg) Shipping Information We ship from Japan.
