Painted Antique Renaissance Style French Bibliotheque Deux Corps

About the Item

This fabulous parcel paint bibliotheque or buffet a deux corps from Southwest France was created in the 19th Century, largely with 17th Century elements. The large variety motifs which are dominant throughout the piece feature unusual and numerous carvings: the playful Bacchanalian cherubs with their instruments, dogs, acanthus leaves, scrolls, angels, spears, musicians, lions, and more. The top cabinet has two glass paneled doors, which open with a key. Inside is three shelves covered in a red velvet. The bottom storage cabinet in not upholstered and has one shelf. The front panel on the lower cabinet has a remarkable display of full field ornamentation. Notice the unusual asymmetrical style and form of the scrolling rinceau on the side panels of the trumeau and the front of the apron. Usually they are symmetrical. At the center of the trumeau’s panel are hand carved letters, IHS. There are decorated stepped out pilasters on both cabinets bearing the cherubs with lion face capitals and much more. The sides have plain panels in order not to compete with the front. Four turnip feet hold up this wonderful piece. This antique renaissance style bibliotheque/deux corps will be a wonderful narrow bookcase or display cabinet in any home. Old and functional locks come with keys.
