Paul SORMANI (1817-1877)
He was born in Venice in 1817 and later established a highly successfully business in Paris at 10 rue Charlot in 1867. His firm produced furniture in a variety of styles, including excellent quality versions in Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. He exhibited at all the major exhibitions of his time, winning a bronze medal in 1849 and a médaille de première classe in 1855. On his death in 1877 the firm was taken over by his wife and son, who continued the business until 1934.
Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, decorated her palaces with beautiful creations by Paul Sormani whose designs were of a select few favored by the Empress. Revivals of Louis XV and XVI pieces were in high demand among affluent Parisians, and Sormani created many of the finest and most important furnishings of the period.
Paul Sormani, cabinet maker and renowned ciseleur decorated its furniture of chiselled and gilt bronzes.

Louis XVI Style Ormolu Mounted Commode with Italian White Marble Top
Located in Miami, FL
A very fine quality Louis XVI Style ormolu-mounted commode or chest of drawers with an Italian white marble top that is truly breathtaking! Intricate inlaid marquetry design throughout, the front and sides of the piece as well. Remarkable attention to detail in the brass mounts and other hardware!
This beautiful Louis XVI style ormolu-mounted commode inlaid with marquetry and parquetry of rosewood, satinwood, possibly amaranth and painted wood inlays, some similarities to the model by Jean-Henri Riesener from Circa 1880. The breakfront white marble top above a conforming moulded cornice and a pair of large deep drawers inlaid with a central foliate, flanked by lattice and patera-decorated panels, the sides with similar panels, the angles with acanthus-cast volutes, on scrolled acanthus feet. The white marble top with striations and veins coming through.
Generously sized, the two spacious drawers are perfect for storing your belongings.
Would enhance any bedroom, living room, foyer, entryway or office and will have your guests conversing amongst one another about the pure detail and craftsmanship used in order to make it. Embodied with a sense of luxury and glamour, this Louis XVI Style commode or chest of drawers can be paired with a variety of other styles you may already have in your home or place of choosing!
Truly a show stopper and will certainly be a conversation starter at your next gathering! Would look wonderful with modern artwork hanging above and an 18th or 19th Century Mantel Clock (choose from our collection) on top of the white marble to further accentuate this beautiful piece of functional furniture.
Very good condition with minor surface scratches and small blemishes, but no significant imperfections. Age appropriate wear.
