Restored Walnut & Burl Helen Hobey Baker Cabinet + Pair Mirrors Danish Style

About the Item

This rare and super sculptural cabinet or dresser was designed in the 1970s by Helen Hobey for Baker. It features a walnut and burlwood construction that is warm and pleasant to the eye. Sides that slope inward to meet the top, and an articulated base with handosme stretchers create a distinct and stylish look. Bronze-tone door handles for the center create contrast to the burlwood set behind them. Four doors open to reveal 9 large drawers that work smoothly. Minor silvering loss to original mirrors. The mirrors feature anodized aluminum trim and a slight high-quality bevel to the edge of the glass. This example has been professionally restored. This includes stripping of old finish by hand. Sanding of all surfaces to create an even, open, and receptive grain that does not include swirl marks found when using mechanical sanders. Staining as needed. Burnished satin laquer finish using carnauba wax, by hand. All screws for hinges uniformly replaced. All magnetic catches functioning. All drawers cheched for for smooth operation with cleaned interiors. A quality piece enhanced by a superior hand-performed restoration. You will love this piece. • Helen & Hobey Baker Highboy Chest, Walnut and Brass, 1950's
By Baker Furniture Company, Helen Hobey
    Located in Culver City, CA
This gorgeous walnut 2 piece chest on chest was designed by Helen & Hobey Baker in the 1950's. This piece has all the fun aspects of a true bold mid century modern piece -- clean, angular swooping lines that give the piece an almost googie look that is unmistakably mid century modern. The legs Stand-off on the sides of this piece and also feature hits of brass detailing that are an echo of the large circular brass disk pull on the top. The brass pieces feature asymmetrical detailing that is almost chinoiserie feeling. This chest effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. This piece would also look wonderful in a boho chic, Chinoiserie, or Hollywood Regency styled home or office as well. While Helen Hobey might not be as recognizable household name as her male counterparts, make no mistake, her designs are simply stunning. We currently have this piece in the gallery situated with 2 Hans Wegner papa bear chairs, a Kofod Larsen credenza...
