Sheraton Revival Painted Satinwood Side Cabinet

About the Item

This very fine Sheraton Revival painted satinwood side-cabinet is of breathtaking quality, each drawer and panelled door fits precisely. The central demilune section is enclosed by three graduated drawers and is flanked by gracefully curved panelled doors. The whole is raised on square tapering legs with brass cappings. Look at the ebonised lines, the carefully shaped escutcheons. The fine handles and locks, mahogany lined drawers with dust beads. This is English furniture at its finest. The painting too is outstanding: The flanking doors are well-painted with flowers, (a pleasant change from the Three Graces, after Angelica Kauffman). The drawer fronts are painted with floral swags and garlands. The demilune surface is charmingly painted with a fan-shaped view of children at play in a half-timbered cottage garden, and finally the serpentine shaped border with a repeating design of peacock feathers. This cabinet is as well-made as any we have ever seen, and more than equals any period example we have ever sold.

A rare and important Sheraton period painted satinwood cheveret in original finish and with original painted floral swags and garlands. The superstructure with fitted book carrier; the stand with two short drawers above a secretaire drawer, fitted with a writing slide, with shaped under-tier and on square tapering legs. This is a rather rare form, but to find it in satinwood, painted and in the original finish is very rare indeed. This little desk was made for personal correspondence; billets doux and was already old when Jane Austin...
