About the Item
A Stunning Late 17th Century, Willliam And Mary Period, Walnut And Burr Walnut Chest, Having Superbly Figured Top, Front And Sides With Exceptional Geometric Design Inlay, Panels And Banding, The Two Short And Three Long Drawers With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Elegant Replacement Turned Bun Feet.
Towards the end of teh 17th century as cabinet makers became more skilled and more decorative woods became available to them then the very best in their field sought to find ways to show off and heavily decorate what could once have been regarded as plain, functional items of furniture. The cabinet maker who made this chest was certainly one of those people, with inlays, bandings and various different cuts of walnut being used to create tremendous decorative effect.
This is a fabulous example of a late 17th century walnut veneered chest of drawers, with exceptional care and attention to detail paid to the decoration of the top, drawer fronts and sides really setting it apart from my far the majority of similar examples from both this period and later. You often find that when so much effort has been put into the decoration of the piece, then the quality of construction is lacking, but there is certainly no danger of that here with this wonderful chest.
Anothe feature of note is that as much effort has gone into the decoration and pattern on the ends, as well as the front and top, which is relatively unusual and also the secondary timbers are of a very high quality, which means the chest remains in excellent condition.
The brass handles and bun feet have been replaced at some point in its history, but this is very, very common on items of this age and its great that t hey have been replaced with examples which suit the piece and sit well on it. There are no aesthetically displeasing condition issues of any kind, remarkable really considering that the chest is at least 320 years old!
As with all items which we offer for sale this chest of drawers has been attended to by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring that it is very much ready to be placed immediately into the home.

The first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, commissioned the first chest of this type, i.e. a tall bank of drawers secured by hinged locking pilasters to take with him and carry around various battlefields and that is where the name wellington chest comes from. It is now used to refer to almost any tall, narrow antique chest of drawers.
From around 1820 onwards they were manufactured in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, plus they varied a great deal in terms of both their quality and the wood which they were constructed from.
