About the Item

William and Mary chest of drawers hand-made in England in the early 1700s using oak. This is a gorgeous piece with a very long history. When we first saw it we knew we wanted it, and to be honest, were we still living in the US we would have taken it home with us, as we often do with pieces we just love. This is a stunning chest of drawers both because of its elegant proportions as well as its color and character. The chest presents a two over three conformation, with two small drawers on the top and three long drawers below. Each drawer shows beautiful hand-made large dovetail joints. The drawer fronts are flat, decorated by flamed veneer and inlaid walnut crossband. The top was made with two inlaid board framed on three side by molding with ogee edge. Rounded molding is also present around the drawers, historically used to cover the dovetails used to keep the carcase (case) together. The sides and the back are also made of straight boards nailed to the case. The bun feet are not original but typical of the William and Mary style. This chest of drawers has very simple, yet elegant, lines; which make it an easy chest to place anywhere in a home. It would look stunning in an entry way, formal dining room, as a nightstand or, honestly, anywhere you want to place it to be able to look at it. There are few pieces I find myself staring at with a silly smile, and this is one of them. The drawers work well, so it could be used on a daily basis as well, if you are looking for something practical.

Repaired: Top back corner (pictured) has damage that was repaired but still shows a bit. Replacements made: Feet were replaced, hardware not original to the piece but of the period. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Feet have been replaced with style-appropriate bun feet.
