About the Item

A fine late 19th century Louis XVI style gilt bronze Wedgwood Jasperware commode a vantaux with white marble top attributed to François Linke. After a commode made for Marie Antoinette’s receiving rooms at Fontainebleau. This spectacular commode a vantaux contains three fabulous Wedgwood Jasperware plaques at the center of each of its three decorated faces. The central wedgwood plaque depicts the story of Coriolanus with His Wife and Mother begging him to return to Rome while the two side plaques showcase a trio of putti tending to a garden. The highly sophisticated workmaship required to create this piece is best exemplified by the crisp gilded mounts of egg and dart banding, winding floral vines forming golden mean spirals , draped fabric (swagged festoons), cascading ribbons and Corinthian column tops, all resting on palmette feet. A central lion's mask encircled by oak branches crowns the entire decorative composition. The commode contains three drawers and a large lower compartment with cupboard doors. This commode's design relates closely to that of a pair adapted by Guillaume Benneman from a model by Joseph Stöckel who supplied Marie-Antoinette with furniture in 1786 for the Salon des Jeux at Fontainebleau. The commode has been copied in widely varying degrees of quality throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, however, this present example by Stöckel and Benneman's exhibits a high level of execution and finish associated with the finest quality pieces, and is a late 19th century recreation of 18th century furnishings. Origin: French Date: Late 19th Century Dimensions: 35 x 72 x 30 inches Photos of the commode with and without the marble top are included.
