About the Item

Product of late Edo period (estimate 1860s-1870s) in Aomori prefecture, Japan. Originally made as tool chest or medicine chest, made of thick, fine grade reddish Sugi cedar. The rustic surface of this Tansu tells us this had been used from generation to generation - a piece of the wood block print flyer from Meiji era, a piece of old newspaper printed in old-school font, remains of washi paper labels, then modern stickers. A few minor losses on drawer front panels & inner panels, and the back panels of main unit, had been repaired by solid wood backing at some time in the past. these elements bring good wabi sabi elements altogether. Smooth opening & closing operation on all drawers. Of course, it's still tough enough for actual use. *** We're eco-friendly, organic-oriented vintage wood furniture & fitting seller. Avoiding the harsh chemicals as much as possible, using organic & traditional materials in the whole process, especially cleaning, repaint / refinish. - using non-toxic, eco-friendly method when cleaning & repairing the item - using organic & traditional materials (beeswax, linseed oil, persimmon tannin, burnt pine ink, etc) for repainted/re-finished items - repairing the necessary parts for long-lasting use
