This antique English chest circa 1850 has fantastic decorative detail seen across the entire facade that is embellished with the bold scale of the circular hardware. The three drawers are flanked by a column on the left and right formed from applied moulding as well as carving that has an architectural sensibility. The change in profile from the carved scroll at the top of each column to the bobbin turned motif that extends for a long strip ending with a raised diamond shaped lozenge with a rectangular shape is visually engaging. The decoration of the top drawer continues the architectural theme with the horizontal frieze of arches supported by vase shaped columns. The arch in the centre is the largest while the left and right arch are the same but of a smaller scale. The frieze is elevated in front of the drawer front and this change in the front profile allows the drama of light to cast shadows across the facade. The use of light to create drama is also seen on the lower two drawers as each has a moulded edge of good scale that frames the perimetre. The arches in the frieze also highlight the marvelous scale of the circular ring pull handles that each feature the sculpted face of a lion. All six of the handsome brass hardware (two each on each of the three drawers) pulls are set with symmetry that enhances the sense of balance and harmony. The chest stands upon turned feet at the front while the back legs are bracket in form. Because the chest possesses such a strong presence the top is slightly wider and embellished with a wide moulded edge. The monochromatic painted finish has of course been refreshed over the years and gives the chest a contemporary impression. The combination of the decorative details in contrast with the painted surface give the chest its power as a focal point in an interior.
