About the Item

This impressive Late Federal period chest of drawers dates to around 1840 and is crafted from richly figured mahogany with a stately presence. The top drawer arrangement features a band of five small drawers across the top—typical of the era—adding both visual interest and functional storage. The piece is flanked by full turned columns that terminate in bold carved paw feet, giving the chest a sense of strength and classical gravitas. The selection of solid mahogany and mahogany veneers showcases a beautiful flame grain pattern throughout the drawer fronts and case. Hand-cut dovetails and wooden drawer pulls reinforce the fine craftsmanship of the period. The carved leaf accents on the corners above the columns are particularly well done and lend the piece a more refined architectural presence. The proportions and overall construction suggest a likely Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern origin. This chest is in nice antique condition, consistent with age and use. There are a few minor veneer repairs that have been done over the years, as well as some general wear to the finish, but nothing that detracts from the overall beauty or function of the piece. A substantial and elegant storage piece, this chest would work beautifully in a traditional bedroom, entryway, or even repurposed in a living space as a statement piece. 42h x 45w x 23d
