About the Item

This unique side chest features a "Brutalist" design that was popular in Europe during the 1960's and 1970's. During the post-war period, Hungarian furniture production was redirected toward simple furniture for the masses and away from luxury production. However, Communist party officials encouraged limited production of high-quality pieces for themselves and to compete with the cultural fashions of the West. Art and culture, including furniture, were seen as legitimizing the socialist system. Brutalism was immediately adopted as the dominant variant of the "Mid-Century Socialist" style. It is boldness, originality, and lack of connection to previous styles that were seen as virtuous as was its anarchic use of materials and motifs. This chest features oak-and-brass drawer fronts arranged to project a collage. The brass on the raised plinth is new.
