About the Item

This fine and incredibly striking work of art is distinct for the austerity of the form set against a most lively scroll cut apron. Entirely original, though carefully refinished during the last century, the highboy survives in simply outstanding condition. The bold cornice is a complex multipiece molding with a series of steps over the concave form, circa 1760-1780. The upper case hosts five graduated drawers divided by drawer blades that through-dovetail into to sides of the case, being backed by pine runner strips that were at one point replaced. The lower case features a pair of broad drawers with a single drawer blade that locks into the corners. Drawer structure is just gorgeous, the neat dovetailing of the sides into the front and back have permanently locked the drawers in place, the bottom board showing unfinished kerf marks of the straight saw across the centers, the edges set into grooves in the sides. The tops of the drawer sides are chaneled with a single bead clanked by raised humps, a manner often found in Connecticut drawer structure. Each of the four corners is integral with the leg, being carved of a single piece of cherry from the foot through the waist. The sides of the lower case are set horizontally and tenon into these corners, being locked in place with a series of original wooden pegs on either side. The sides of the upper case are set vertically and dovetail into the bottom and top, the backboards being nailed into the rabbeted edge of the sides, the upper plank of the backboards being chamfered to set into the top plank of the case. Even oxidization across all backboards of the upper and lower case testify to an untouched structure, every nail being the original hand-forged rosehead fasteners used by the craftsman at time of origin. The underside of the lower case shows pure and untouched nearly black oxidization in the rough hand scroll cutting of the apron around all three sides, the leg returns entirely original - it is possible the tiny wooden pins affixing the returns to the case were added at one point to stop the returns from falling off, but this might be original. The gentle cabriole of the leg terminates over raised-pad feet with an inset ankle. For the serious collector of pure and fine works from Early America, this is a most excellent acquisition. Measurements: 75 3/8” H x 39 1/4” W x 19 5/8” D. Condition report: Refinished, the surface in excellent condition. Shrink cracks in sides of case, returns and molding. Pegs affixing the original leg returns to case possibly later. Original brasses and locks, no key. Runners inside case replaced. Overall in outstanding original condition.
