French 18th century Régence Period Walnut commode, signed Bernard Van Risenburgh

About the Item

An exceptional and palatially scaled French 18th century Régence Period Walnut, Ormolu and Sarrancolin marble commode, signed Bernard I Van Risenburgh. This stunning Bombee shaped commode is raised on elegantly curved legs adorned with richly chased pierced Ormolu mounts. Above is the arbalest shaped apron decorated with a grand scale pierced Ormolu foliate reserve. The lower section of the commode showcases two stunning doors convincingly designed to mimic drawers, and displaying wonderful foliate decorated Ormolu pulls. Luxuriant Ormolu foliate mounts accent the corners of the chest, while flanking the two top drawers designed similar to the bottom doors, and displaying the same wonderful scrolled foliate Ormolu pulls. The top right drawer is designed with a concealed interior panel which can be removed to reveal a hidden compartment behind the front middle reserve. Above is the wonderful Sarrancolin marble top which follows the shape of the commode and is finished with a mottled edge. Bernard I Van Risenburgh (c. 1660–1738) was a Dutch-born cabinetmaker who established a successful workshop in Paris, laying the foundation for one of the most renowned cabinetmaking dynasties of the 18th century. Known for his elegant designs and exceptional craftsmanship, his work reflected the transition from Baroque to Régence styles. Bernard I trained his son, Bernard II, who would go on to achieve even greater fame, ensuring the family's lasting legacy in the history of French furniture.
