About the Item

A magnificent and high quality French early 19th century Louis XVI st. tulipwood and ormolu five drawer chest. The chest is raised by unusual and most handsome square tapered feet with unique extremely decorative square and ball sabots below elegant fitted ormolu chandelles. The frieze displays a richly chased foliate designed ormolu band following the striking shape and matching the rare notch to each side, showcasing the master craftsman's high skill set and the meticulous attention to detail. The cut corners display a fine rosette and foliate ormolu movements below a detailed corner mount. The two central drawers are 'sans traverse', without crossbar, and display berried laurel pulls framed within a foliate ormolu band with two central ormolu family crest shaped keyhole escutcheons. All set on a sensational two tone veneered background observed best from a side angle. Each side is decorated in the same manner. The top three drawers each display impressive pierced ormolu mounts of mirrored Vitruvian scrolls within an egg and dart border. Above is the original Rouge Royal marble top with a mottled border and rounded corners. All original fire gilding and hardware throughout.

Louis XV Chest of Drawers, France, 1770
Located in Belmont, MA
This gorgeous French Louis XV chest of drawers dates back to around 1770. It was made during the so called Transition period, the time between Louis XV and Louis XVI. It already shows the plain and stricter design of the Louis XVI period, but has still some playful marquetry decor details which draw from the more pompous Louis XV style. The three drawers commode stands on four cabriole legs with bronze sabots. Between the first and the second drawer is a decorated bronze band. This beautiful chest of drawers has its original wooden top with its veneer decor matching the decor of the front and sides. The Transition commode has been expertly refinished in our workshop. The price includes costs for the exquisite restoration and the international shipping from Europe...
