Louis XV Commode Stamped Louis Delaitre, Crowned C Bronzes

About the Item

Delaitre Louis, Parisian cabinetmaker received master on November 19, 1738. Exceptional chest of drawers from the Louis XV period made of kingwood veneer inlaid with frieze and geometric frames, opening with three drawers in two rows, the two top drawers being asymmetrical and without intermediate upright simulating a single large drawer. The front uprights are adorned with three brass grooves extended in veneer at the bottom. Two horizontal grooves under each row of drawers adorn the curved front. Resting on four arched legs and topped with a beautiful Belgian royal marble top molded in corbin's beak, our chest of drawers presents a superb ornamentation of gilded bronzes of rocaille inspiration, they are very finely chiseled and bear the hallmark of the crowned C in force between 1745 and 1749. Superb piece of furniture with pure and elegant lines where the influences of the regency style are still present. Work of the master cabinetmaker Louis Delaitre, this piece of furniture is stamped L DELAITRE on the front upright, it also bears the JME stamp of the Jurande des Maitres Ebéniste. Rare piece of furniture in terms of its authenticity and prestige: stamp of a master cabinetmaker, jurande hallmark, bronzes with crowned C, all the marks of french cabinetmaking excellence in 18th century are present. Collector's furniture. Excellent condition, restored by our workshop with a superb natural buffer varnish to restore the piece of furniture to its original beauty. Bronzes with crowned C: “We find this hallmark on certain bronzes, it attests to a tax on metals in force between 1745 and 1749. Its presence makes it possible to precisely date the production of a piece of furniture. The crowned C has also become a hallmark of quality for collectors, it only seems to have been engraved on the most refined bronzes. » Source: Revue l'objet d'art n°320, page 46/54, January 1998
