A Mid-Century Set of Side Chests with Macassar Veneer and Brass Edge Trim
About the Item
The simple and solid casework of these chests of drawers is enlivened by dramatic brass trim along the edges of the drawers and brass plated handles. The highly polished wood veneer is macassar, a type of ebony. The chest is Hungarian made, based on a mid-century Italian model. The Hungarians are unusually skillful with wood veneer, having experience that goes back to the Biedermeier era of Austria-Hungary and Germany. That skill transferred over to Art Deco furniture, mostly made in Budapest and Transylvania, and has been carried down to the present. The chests is large enough to flank a formal entry and small enough to be used as bedside chests. The finish, though glossy, is remarkably tough and scratch resistant.
