About the Item

NORTHERN EUROPEAN BOWFRONT CHEST OF DRAWERS IN THE ENGLISH TASTE Probably Sweden or Denmark ca. 1800 Pine and mixed woods with later bluish-black paint over original inlaid veneers and solid woods; retaining original iron locks and brass hardware 32 1/8" H x 22 5/8" D x 40 1/8" W A late 18th-century bowfront chest of drawers crafted in pine with veneered and inlaid surfaces, now covered in an early bluish-black painted finish. The design reflects English George III influence, with a shaped top, molded edge, and a boldly curved façade set over bracket feet. The pine drawers are hung with period sand-cast brass bail handles and bright-engraved escutcheons in the English taste. The iron locks are early and hand-forged and designed to always respring the lock - you need to use the key to unlock each drawer at every engagement. The paint is dry, worn and richly patinated, with areas of loss revealing the earlier inlaid veneers below. The back is constructed with wide, rough-sawn vertical planks set within grooves in the sides of the case. Condition: Repainted at some point, apparently quite early: loss, wear and abrading to the surfaces throughout. Retains one working key, all locks functioning. Sturdy, stable and perfectly functional. Ready to place. ref. 506ZBO26W About silla antiques & art Established in 2009, we have available in our 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery an ever-changing selection of carefully curated and catalogued furniture, decorative arts, paintings, sculpture and estate jewelry.
