Chiaro di Luna Sideboard by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio

About the Item

An extraordinary sideboard designed by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio in the early 1980s. Entitled "Chiaro di Luna" ("Moonlight"), the piece is crafted from precious bird's-eye maple-also known as "occhio di pernice"-renowned for its iridescent, luminous quality. It is stained in a rich brown hue and elegantly adorned with octagonal ebony line motifs and refined marquetry inlays. A truly majestic and imposing piece, this sideboard exemplifies the finest craftsmanship of its time. It features a large open compartment with a shelf, fully veneered in bird's-eye maple, and three spacious drawers with fronts in the same veneer combined with acid-etched glass panels. Luciano Frigerio, born in Desio in 1928, left a lasting legacy in the world of furniture design and production, carrying on his family's tradition of fine cabinetmaking. After graduating in accounting from Collegio Pio XI, he developed a passion for both furniture design and music composition. The socio-economic context of 1960s Brianza offered exceptional opportunities in the field of furniture making, and Frigerio was quick to seize them. Visits to renowned workshops and relationships with key figures such as Gio Ponti and Franco Albini inspired him to transform the family business into a company with global reach. In 1973, he was honored with the title of Commendatore of the Italian Republic in recognition of his dedication to Italian craftsmanship. A pivotal moment in his career was the realization of his dream to create furniture as unique art pieces. With the help of a team of master artisans, he developed the "Sculptural Furniture in Solid Wood" and "Sculptural Beds in Cast Bronze" collections-one-of-a-kind alternatives to industrial production that fused high craftsmanship with precious materials and bold vision. Frigerio's collaboration with prominent Italian architects and designers-including Franco Albini, Sergio Asti, and Paolo Portoghesi-solidified his place in the design world. He believed architects could bring a singular artistic perspective to furniture, leading to a philosophy based on numbered, signed, and uniquely crafted pieces. Between the 1970s and 1990s, his company expanded with ten showrooms in major Italian cities. His contributions were widely recognized, culminating in his knighthood in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 1989. Frigerio's works have graced major Italian and international galleries and have been awarded at prestigious events such as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and Abitare il Tempo. Permanent exhibitions in Milan-including the Galleria del Sagrato and the Art Gallery on Via Montenapoleone-highlight his enduring presence in the Milanese art and design scene. His legacy lives on through exclusive pieces that celebrate the union of function, beauty, and artisanal mastery. Today, his work continues to influence contemporary design, standing as a reference point for innovation and excellence.
